Great Sermon Series

Faith,Sermons,Theology 21 March 2011 | 0 Comments

One of my goals this year it to try and listen / read widely to different preachers within the evangelical landscape.  I feel this will help sharpen my own preaching skills, and help me find my own voice.  So far I’m not doing that great (listening wise), but I did want to pass on a sermon series that has recently been very helpful to me.

Ultimate Authority by Matt Chandler
(7 sermons)

Ultimate Authority and the Suicide of Rebellion
Ultimate Authority Revealed
Government and Institutions
Guiding and Confronting the Mess
Disciplining the Disciple
Submitting in Gray Areas
Authority in the Home

All sermons can be found here:  fm.thevillagechurch.net/sermons

Latest Design Project – “Invest” Sermon Series Graphic

Graphic Design 5 August 2010 | 0 Comments

This is a project I just completed for the (sola)s college ministry.  The initial design idea was proposed to me as “an investment portfolio feel.”  From there I began playing with the idea of the “v” in invest turning into a line graph.  The additional hand drawn graphics were added later to help add complexity and depth to the design.  I mostly used Illustrator for this project, but touched up certain areas using Photoshop.

Have you read 9mark’s review of the Nooma Video Series?

Culture,Faith,Theology 14 June 2010 | 2 Comments

http://www.9marks.org/books/scoopa-nooma-part-1

Here’s an excerpt:

“The gospel as Bell communicates it in NOOMA runs something like this: All of us are broken, sinful, selfish, and prideful people. We carry around the baggage of our hurts, our resentments, and our jealousies. As a result we are just a shell of the kind of people God intends us to be. But our God is a loving God who accepts us and loves us just as we are. He can comfort us, heal us, and make us whole, real, authentic, living, laughing people. Not only that, but Jesus came to show us how to live revolutionary lives of love, compassion, and acceptance. By learning from his teachings and following him, we can live the full and complete lives that God intended.

And that’s about it. That’s not just the introduction that leads to an explanation of the cross, atonement, the resurrection and salvation, either. So far, at least, that’s what NOOMA holds out as “The Gospel.” Full stop”

My Opinion

I admire Bell’s creativity , his desire to help people, and his desire to point them towards God, it just doesn’t seem like he’s pointing people towards the God of the Bible.

Also helpful on this topic is Mark Driscoll’s chapter on the Emerging Church in his book Religion Saves (Religion Saves is also a sermon series by Driscoll that mirrors the book, see the link to the video below).

loveliveforJerry

This design was created for an event called Love Live at 24 Church.  Love Live was a 4 act concert mixed with presentations by various non-profit organizations.  The event was designed to help the people of 24church become more aware of ways in which they could embrace the ethics of the Kingdom of God by caring for the poor and “living gospel.”  The event was an outgrowth of a sermon series entitled “Love God. Love People. Live Gospel.”

Logo design, posters, and graphics for sermon series like these are probably what I do the most of as a designer.  I’m pretty fond of both of these at the moment.
